Do you need the Brompton with a rear rack?

The Brompton folding bike is known for its compact size and ease of handling. It is an ideal bike for urban use and for people who need a bike that is easy to transport or takes up little space at home and in the office. However, some Brompton riders may want to carry additional luggage, and this is where a rear rack comes in. In this article, we will weigh the pros and cons of a rear rack on a Brompton folding bike.
First, a rear rack provides additional storage space for items such as backpacks, bags, and shopping bags. If you often shop or commute by bike, this can be a decisive advantage. A rear rack also improves the balance and stability of the folded bike by distributing the weight more evenly on the rear. Instead of a single wheel on the mudguard, the rear rack also has two wheels at the back, so the bike stands on four points.
On the other hand, a rear rack naturally increases the weight and size of the bike. This can make it more difficult to carry and store the bike. Therefore, high-quality titanium accessory models offer advantages because they are - depending on the model - much lighter than the original Brompton rear rack.
It is also important to note that a rear rack on a Brompton folding bike is not always easy to install. There are many different types of racks on the market, and not all are perfectly compatible with the Brompton. It can also be difficult to find a rear rack that matches the Brompton's design and does not detract from the bike's elegant appearance.
Overall, a rear rack on a Brompton folding bike is a double-edged sword. It can improve the storage space and balance of the bike, but it can also increase the weight and size of the bike and detract from its design. If you often shop or travel by bike, a rear rack can be a useful accessory, but if you primarily use the bike for short rides and daily use, it may be superfluous.
We therefore offer two different titanium models that, depending on your needs, strike an optimal balance between the advantages and disadvantages.
The original Brompton rear rack is great. That's a good starting point. Super solid, functional, and super practical, the elastic straps alone are absolutely ingenious. For weight fetishists, it's a nuisance with its over 500 grams, but for many users, the practicality will outweigh this disadvantage. So, if you already have a rear rack on your bike and aren't bothered by the weight and somewhat clunky look, you should keep it.

The standard type is quite close to the original, it offers a long and wide support surface, enough space even for heavier loads. Here you can even transport a crate of drinks if it is well secured. And it has a bracket at the back where the original taillight can be attached. The weight is 293 grams, which is about 250g lighter than the original rear rack.

The Q-Type has a very reduced design and a small support surface, but this also makes it very elegant and sporty, and at 180 grams, it is a real lightweight. However, it naturally does not offer the large storage capacity of a standard model.
